ABSTRACT

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health concern, with millions affected worldwide each year. Extrapulmonary TB, particularly involving the digestive tract and central nervous system, poses distinctive difficulties in both diagnosis and treatment. We report a case involving a 15-year-old girl with a history of intestinal TB on anti-tuberculous therapy who presented with symptoms suggestive of meningitis, along with abdominal pain and distension. Our initial suspicion was tuberculous meningitis, considering the underlining abdominal TB, which was later supported by cerebrospinal fluid analysis showing lymphocytic-predominant pleocytosis and positive acid-fast bacilli staining. Concurrently, the patient developed hemodynamic instability and severe abdominal pain, which on repeat X-rays of the abdomen showed air under the diaphragms, prompting surgical exploration and revealing multiple ileal perforations. Histopathological examination confirmed TB as the cause of perforation. This case highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic complexities of concurrent tuberculous meningitis and intestinal TB perforation. Early recognition and interdisciplinary management are crucial for optimal patient outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Phoenix dactylifera L. is an economically and aesthetically important tree in the southwestern US. Approximately 4900 ha of dates are commercially grown for its edible fruit in the US, including about 1600 ha in the Yuma area and the Hyder Valley of Arizona (USDA, 2023). In October 2022, a severe rot was observed on three date palms in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Early symptoms were brown spots that turned to a black scorch appearance extending along the leaf base and rachis, leading to the lower fronds' wilting, drying, and folding. As the disease progressed upwards, the terminal bud became necrotic and eventually collapsed. Isolation from the necrotic leaf lesions on a potato dextrose agar (PDA) consistently yielded a fast-growing fungus that was initially white with abundant fluffy aerial mycelium, which gradually turned dark olivaceous after growing at 22-25oC under 12 h light for a week. Pycnidial conidiomata formed on pine needles in a water agar were black and globose. Conidiogenous cells were hyaline and cylindrical. The conidia exhibited a thick-walled, ovoid to ellipsoid morphology, initially appearing hyaline and aseptate and transitioned to 1-septate with a dark brown, striated appearance, measuring 19.6 to 23.0 µm x 10.3 to 12.2 µm (n = 20). For molecular identification, genomic DNA was extracted from the mycelia of two isolates. Partial DNA sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA and ß-tubulin (TUB) gene were amplified and sequenced using primers ITS5/ITS4 (White et al. 1990) and Bt2a/Bt2b (Glass and Donaldson 1995). The resulting sequences of ITS (PP346666) and TUB (PP372690) were deposited in the GenBank. A BLASTn search of ITS and TUB sequences revealed a 99 to 100% similarity with the sequences (JX456475, KF766198, and OK338070) of Neodeightonia phoenicum strains causing palm rot in Greece (Ligoxigakis et al. 2013), leaf spot on pygmy date palm in China (Zhang and Song 2022), and an ex-type CBS 122528 culture. Based on these morphological and molecular data, the fungus was identified as N. phoenicum. A pathogenicity test was conducted twice in a greenhouse (daily temperatures:18 ~ 30 oC, relative humidity: 45% ~ 95%) on 4 healthy 1-year-old date palm plants. The petioles of 3 older leaves per plant were wounded by pricking the epidermis of the leaf with a needle (ca 20 pricks per petiole) and inoculated with agar discs from a 4-day-old PDA culture of the fungus. The control consisted of 4 mock-inoculated plants by placing plain PDA on the wounds of leaf petioles. Five weeks after inoculation, all the inoculated leaves showed symptoms of black scorch, petiole rot, and leaf necrosis, which were the same as those symptoms observed on the original diseased trees, while the controls did not show any symptoms. The fungus was re-isolated and confirmed as N. phoenicum by morphology. N. phoenicum has been reported to cause leaf spot, shoots blights, stalk and root rots as well as black scorch on different palm species all over the world. However, to our knowledge, this is the first report of N. phoenicum causing black scorch and rot disease in Arizona. The possible spread of N. phoenicum could have a significant economic impact and requires immediate attention through suitable disease management initiatives.

Introduction: Heterotrophic protists colonizing microbial mats have received little attention over the last few years, despite their importance in microbial food webs. A significant challenge originates from the fact that many protists remain uncultivable and their functions remain poorly understood. Methods: Metabarcoding studies of protists in microbial mats across high-altitude lagoons of different salinities (4.3-34 practical salinity units) were carried out to provide insights into their vertical stratification at the millimeter scale. DNA and cDNA were analyzed for selected stations. Results: Sequence variants classified as the amoeboid rhizarian Rhogostoma and the ciliate Euplotes were found to be common members of the heterotrophic protist communities. They were accompanied by diatoms and kinetoplastids. Correlation analyses point to the salinity of the water column as a main driver influencing the structure of the protist communities at the five studied microbial mats. The active part of the protist communities was detected to be higher at lower salinities (<20 practical salinity units). Discussion: We found a restricted overlap of the protist community between the different microbial mats indicating the uniqueness of these different aquatic habitats. On the other hand, the dominating genotypes present in metabarcoding were similar and could be isolated and sequenced in comparative studies (Rhogostoma, Euplotes, Neobodo). Our results provide a snapshot of the unculturable protist diversity thriving the benthic zone of five athalossohaline lagoons across the Andean plateau.

ABSTRACT

Root rot is one of the main reasons for yield losses of red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) production. Pre-inoculation with Trichoderma harzianum can effectively lower the incidence of red kidney bean root rot. In this study, four treatments including CK (control), Fu13 (Fusarium oxysporum), T891 (T. harzianum) and T891 + Fu13 (T. harzianum + F. oxysporum) were arranged in a pot experiment to investigate how T891 affected the incidence and severity of root rot, plant growth, and changes of defense enzyme activity in red kidney bean plants. Community composition and diversity of the rhizosphere microbiota was evaluated through high-throughput sequencing, and co-occurrence network was analyzed. The results showed that when compared to the Fu13 treatment, pre-inoculation with T891 reduced the incidence and severity of red kidney bean root rot by 40.62 and 68.03% (p < 0.05), increased the root length, shoot length, total dry biomass by 48.63, 97.72, 122.17%. Upregulated activity of super-oxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) by 7.32, 38.48, 98.31% (p < 0.05), and reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) by 23.70% (p < 0.05), respectively. Microbiological analyses also showed that F. oxysporum reduced alpha diversity resulting in alteration the composition of the rhizosphere microbial community in red kidney bean. T891 significantly reduced abundance of F. oxysporum, allowing the enrichment of potentially beneficial bacteria Porphyrobacter (ASV 46), Lysobacter (ASV 85), Microbacteriaceae (ASV 105), and Gemmatimonas (ASV 107), resulting in a more stable structure of the microbial network. The results of random forest analysis further revealed that ASV 46 (Porphyrobacter) was the primary influencing factor for the incidence of root rot after inoculation with T891, while ASV 85 (Lysobacter) was the primary influencing factor for the biomass of red kidney bean. In conclusion, T. harzianum promotes the growth of red kidney bean and inhibits root rot by improving plant antioxidant enzyme activity and regulating the rhizosphere microbial community.

As an important habitat for microorganisms, the phyllosphere has a great impact on plant growth and health, and changes in phyllosphere microorganisms are closely related to the occurrence of leaf diseases. However, there remains a limited understanding regarding alterations to the microbial community in the phyllosphere resulting from pathogen infections. Here, we analyzed and compared the differences in phyllosphere microorganisms of powdery mildew cucumber from three disease severity levels (0% < L1 < 30%, 30% ≤ L2 < 50%, L3 ≥ 50%, the number represents the lesion coverage rate of powdery mildew on leaves). There were significant differences in α diversity and community structure of phyllosphere communities under different disease levels. Disease severity altered the community structure of phyllosphere microorganisms, Rosenbergiella, Rickettsia, and Cladosporium accounted for the largest proportion in the L1 disease grade, while Bacillus, Pantoea, Kocuria, and Podosphaera had the highest relative abundance in the L3 disease grade. The co-occurrence network analysis of the phyllosphere microbial community indicated that the phyllosphere bacterial community was most affected by the severity of disease. Our results suggested that with the development of cucumber powdery mildew, the symbiotic relationship between species was broken, and the entire bacterial community tended to compete.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of familial MS (fMS) in Belgrade MS population, discern the differences between the persons with fMS and sporadic MS, and to detect the presence of anticipation phenomenon in fMS patients. METHODS: The data on the demographic and clinical characteristics of MS patients was obtained from the Belgrade MS population Registry. In cases of vertical transmission of MS, the family members were divided into the younger and older generation, in order to assess the potential presence of anticipation phenomenon. To adjust for follow-up time bias, a secondary analysis including only patients who had the onset of symptoms before 39 years (75.percentile), and those who were 39 + years, was performed. RESULTS: The prevalence of fMS in Belgrade MS population is 6.4%. FMS cases had earlier age at MS symptom onset (30.4 vs. 32.3 years) compared to sporadic MS cohort. When comparing fMS cases across generations, the younger generation had significantly lower age at onset compared with the older one (25.8 vs. 35.7 years, p < 0.001). After adjustment for the different length of the follow-up, the difference in age at symptom onset between the groups was reduced, but it still existed and was statistically significant (30.0 years in younger vs. 36.4 years in older generation, p = 0.040). CONCLUSION: In our study, the analysis of fMS cases across generations, showed an earlier age of symptom onset in the younger generation, even after adjustment. These results indicate the possibility of existence of anticipation phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a potentially disabling and often irreversible consequence of breast cancer treatment, caused by the mechanical incompetence of the lymphatic system, resulting in reduced drainage capacity and functional overload due to an excessive volume of interstitial fluid surpassing the system's transport capacity in the arm. We wanted to determine the impact and explore the differences in independent risk factors for the occurrence of BCRL; incidence of BCRL over a five-year period at the Institute of Oncology Vojvodina in Sremska Kamenica and to answer the research question regarding the influence of the prehabilitation program on the overall incidence of BCRL during the observed five-year period. METHODS: From 2014 to 2018, a retrospective study was conducted at the Institute of Oncology of Vojvodina in Sremska Kamenica, analyzing female patients who had undergone breast cancer surgery. RESULTS: The study included 150 breast cancer patients who developed secondary lymphedema following surgery with the mean age of 59.2 ± 11.3 years. Fluctuations in hospitalization rates were observed over the five-year period, with the highest number of admissions in 2014 (24.0%) and a decline in 2018 (14.0%). The most common surgical procedure performed was left quadrantectomy (24.0%), followed by right quadrantectomy (20.0%) and left amputation (15.3%). The mean number of removed lymph nodes was 15.2 ± 6.1, with no statistically significant association between the number of removed lymph nodes and the manifestation of secondary lymphedema. The severity of secondary lymphedema varied based on patient age, with a higher incidence of moderate and severe lymphedema observed in patients aged 61 years and older. Patients who underwent radical surgery were more likely to experience severe lymphedema compared to those who had conservative surgery, although this difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: In our study, the type of surgery, elapsed time since surgery, and the number of removed lymph nodes were not influencing factors for the occurrence of BCRL. However, concerning its severity, a greater number of systemic therapy modalities combined with radiotherapy were associated with a more frequent occurrence of mild and moderate BCRL. Also, the severity of BCRL varied among different age groups, with a higher incidence of moderate and severe lymphedema observed in patients aged 61 years and older. Ultimately, improving the quality of life for individuals affected by secondary lymphedema remains a crucial goal in the field of oncology.

ABSTRACT

Glycogen Storage Disease (GSD) IXd, caused by PHKA1 gene mutations, is an X-linked rare disorder that can be asymptomatic or associated with exercise intolerance. GSD type II is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the GAA gene that lead to severe cardiac and skeletal muscle myopathy. We report the first case of co-occurrence of type IXd and type II GSDs in a 53-year-old man with an atypical glycogen storage disease presentation consisting in myalgia in the lower limbs at both rest and after exercise and increased levels of transaminases from the age of 16. At the age of 43, the patient presented a steppage gait, inability to run and walk on his heels, hypotrophy of the pectoral and proximal muscles, reflexes not elicitable, and CK levels 3.6 times the upper reference limit. Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) identified one variant in the PHKA1 gene, c.1360A > G p.Ile454Val (exon 14) inherited by his mother, and two heterozygous variants in the GAA gene, c.784G > A (exon 4) and c.956-6T > C (exon 6). A review of GSD IXd cases reported to date in the literature is also provided.

ABSTRACT

Coal gasification slag (CGS) contains variable amounts of heavy metals, which can negatively impact the environment. The mineral composition, element distribution, occurrence, and leaching characteristics of heavy metals in coal gasification coarse slag (CGCS) and coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) are studied to explain the leaching behavior of heavy metals in CGS. The movable components of heavy metals in CGFS (0.06 %-63.03 %) are significantly higher than those in CGCS (0 %-18.72 %). Leaching Environmental Assessment Framework 1313 data shows that heavy metals Zn, Cr, Cd, As, Pb, Ni, and Cu exhibit high leaching rates at low pH conditions, with Zn leaching concentrations as high as 2.11 mg/L at pH 2. Zn, Cr, and As exhibit obvious amphoteric leaching characteristics, and the leaching concentration of As at high pH (1.34 mg/L) even exceeds that at low pH (1.31 mg/L). Except for Cu, all heavy metals in CGS exceed the class III groundwater standard in some cases. Therefore, evaluation is needed before resource utilization of CGS due to potential leaching of some heavy metals.

In this study, the pollution status of antibiotics and ARGs in sediments from the land-sea intersection of Liaodong Bay was analyzed. The results showed that the level of antibiotic pollution ranged from ND to 433.27 ng/kg, with quinolones and tetracycline as the dominant antibiotics. The relative abundance of ARGs ranged from 3.62 × 10-3 to 1.32 × 10-1 copies/16SrRNA copies, with aminoglycoside and MLSB resistance genes being dominant. Regarding spatial distribution, the land and estuary areas showed higher antibiotic pollution levels than the offshore areas. Similarly, the land and estuary areas exhibited higher antibiotic diversity than the offshore areas. The ARGs were widely distributed on land, and their abundance gradually decreased to the downstream estuary area. Land and coastal areas exhibited higher ARG diversity than estuary areas. Analysis of environmental factors revealed a significant correlation between ARGs and non-corresponding antibiotics, and some ARGs were affected by heavy metals Cu and Pb.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The precise indications for employing the anterior component separation technique (ACST) and the Transversus Abdominis Release (TAR) in abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) remain uncertain, despite the undeniable value of both techniques. The aim of this study was to analyze the anterior fascial closure rate, postoperative wound morbidity, and hernia recurrence rate for both procedures according to the algorithm used for complex AWR. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data was carried out. Patients undergoing AWR for midline incisional hernias using either open or endoscopic ACST (E-ACST) or TAR between March 2013 and August 2022 were included. Patients with lateral hernia components were excluded. The surgical technique was depending on the pre- and intraoperative findings regarding hernia width and on the estimated traction to achieve anterior fascial closure (see algorithm). Initially, intermediate hernia defects ranging from approximately 10-14 cm in width were repaired using E-ACST. However, as the study advanced, TAR became the preferred method for addressing these types of defects. Open ACST was consistently employed for defects wider than 14-15 cm throughout the entire study duration. Outcomes of interest were anterior fascial closure, surgical site occurrences, and hernia recurrence rate. Follow-up was performed at 1 month, 1 year, and 2 years. RESULTS: A total of 119 patients underwent AWR with CST: 63 patients (52.9%) were included in the ACST group and 56 patients (47.1%) in the TAR group. No significant differences were observed in patient and hernia characteristics. The use of botulinum toxin A (BTA) injection and preoperative progressive pneumoperitoneum (PPP) was more frequently used in the ACST group (BTA 19.0%, PPP 15.9% versus BTA 5.4%, PPP 1.8% for TAR patients). Anterior fascial closure was achieved in 95.2% of the ACST group and 98.2% of the TAR group (p = 0.369). The TAR group demonstrated a significantly lower SSO rate at one month (44.3% versus 14.3%, p < 0.001) and required fewer procedural interventions (SSO-PI) (31.1% versus 8.9%, p = 0.003). The recurrence rate at one year was low and there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (ACST 1.8% vs TAR 4.5%, p = 0.422). CONCLUSION: Following a proposed algorithm, the anterior fascial closure rate was high and similar for both techniques. As postoperative wound morbidity is significantly increased after ACST, our findings support recommending TAR for defects up to 14 cm in width, while favoring open ACST for larger defects.

An increase in the incidence of Campylobacter species in rivers raises concerns on the safety of river water for humans who get exposed to river water. This study examines the spatiotemporal dynamics of Campylobacter species in the Bloukrans and Swartkops rivers, analysing patterns of its occurrence in relation to meteorological conditions, physicochemical parameters, seasons, and sampling sites. Physico-chemical parameters and meteorological conditions were measured during water sampling from various sites along the rivers over a year, while Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was utilised to detect Campylobacter genus-specific genes and selected antibiotic-resistant genes. Campylobacter was detected in 66.67% (Bloukrans River) and 58.33% (Swartkops River). In the Bloukrans River, multi-drug resistance genes cmeA (20%), cmeB (65%), cmeC (10%), were detected while and tetO was detected at 70%. In the Swartkops River, the corresponding prevalence were 28%, 66.67%, 28.56%, and 76%. The study indicates that sampling season did not significantly impact Campylobacter prevalence. However, variation in Campylobacter occurrence exists among different sites along the rivers, reflecting the influence of site proximity to potential contamination sources. The study suggests that Campylobacter infection may be endemic in South Africa, with rivers serving as potential sources of exposure to humans, thereby contributing to the epidemiology of campylobacteriosis.

BACKGROUND: Long-term survival after premature birth is significantly determined by development of morbidities, primarily affecting the cardio-respiratory or central nervous system. Existing studies are limited to pairwise morbidity associations, thereby lacking a holistic understanding of morbidity co-occurrence and respective risk profiles. METHODS: Our study, for the first time, aimed at delineating and characterizing morbidity profiles at near-term age and investigated the most prevalent morbidities in preterm infants: bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), pulmonary hypertension (PH), mild cardiac defects, perinatal brain pathology and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). For analysis, we employed two independent, prospective cohorts, comprising a total of 530 very preterm infants: AIRR ("Attention to Infants at Respiratory Risks") and NEuroSIS ("Neonatal European Study of Inhaled Steroids"). Using a data-driven strategy, we successfully characterized morbidity profiles of preterm infants in a stepwise approach and (1) quantified pairwise morbidity correlations, (2) assessed the discriminatory power of BPD (complemented by imaging-based structural and functional lung phenotyping) in relation to these morbidities, (3) investigated collective co-occurrence patterns, and (4) identified infant subgroups who share similar morbidity profiles using machine learning techniques. RESULTS: First, we showed that, in line with pathophysiologic understanding, BPD and ROP have the highest pairwise correlation, followed by BPD and PH as well as BPD and mild cardiac defects. Second, we revealed that BPD exhibits only limited capacity in discriminating morbidity occurrence, despite its prevalence and clinical indication as a driver of comorbidities. Further, we demonstrated that structural and functional lung phenotyping did not exhibit higher association with morbidity severity than BPD. Lastly, we identified patient clusters that share similar morbidity patterns using machine learning in AIRR (n=6 clusters) and NEuroSIS (n=8 clusters). CONCLUSIONS: By capturing correlations as well as more complex morbidity relations, we provided a comprehensive characterization of morbidity profiles at discharge, linked to shared disease pathophysiology. Future studies could benefit from identifying risk profiles to thereby develop personalized monitoring strategies. TRIAL REGISTRATION: AIRR: DRKS.de, DRKS00004600, 28/01/2013. ABSTRACT

Background: The special area of conservation Montesinho/Nogueira (SAC-MN) is a key area for biodiversity conservation in the Iberian Peninsula. Covering an area of approximately 1081 km² in the northeast of Portugal mainland, the SAC-MN is home to a wide range of species, including several endemic and endangered species and priority habitats. Despite its ecological significance and importance for conservation, there is a lack of publicly available biodiversity data, which urges the need to create a comprehensive and up-to-date biodiversity dataset for the SAC-MN. New information: To bridge the knowledge gap on biodiversity in SAC-MN, we undertook a thorough data collection process, including species occurrence records and conservation status information at regional (Portugal) and European levels, from multiple sources. We collected and compiled this information for five major taxonomic groups (amphibians, birds, flora - vascular plants, mammals and reptiles) in SAC-MN, resulting in a total of 31,871 records with 1,312 documented species. In addition, we developed an easy-to-navigate web-based geographic information system (Web GIS). In this article, we present an in-depth report on the process of compiling and preparing data, as well as the development and design of our Web GIS to increase awareness and enhance understanding of the importance of preserving biodiversity in SAC-MN.

ABSTRACT

Background NFE2L2 (nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor-2) encodes a basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factor and exhibits variations in various tumor types, including lung cancer. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the impact of simultaneous mutations on the survival of NFE2L2 -mutant lung cancer patients within specific subgroups. Methods A cohort of 1,103 lung cancer patients was analyzed using hybridization capture-based next-generation sequencing. Results The NFE2L2 gene had alterations in 3.0% (33/1,103) of lung cancer samples, including 1.5% (15/992) in adenocarcinoma and 16.2% (18/111) in squamous cell carcinoma. Thirty-four variations were found, mainly in exons 2 (27/34). New variations in exon 2 (p.D21H, p.V36_E45del, p.F37_E45del, p.R42P, p.E67Q, and p.L76_E78delinsQ) were identified. Some patients had copy number amplifications. Co-occurrence with TP53 (84.8%), CDKN2A (33.3%), KMT2B (33.3%), LRP1B (33.3%), and PIK3CA (27.3%) mutations was common. Variations of NFE2L2 displayed the tightest co-occurrence with IRF2 , TERC , ATR , ZMAT3 , and SOX2 ( p < 0.001). In The Cancer Genome Atlas Pulmonary Squamous Carcinoma project, patients with NFE2L2 variations and 3q26 amplification had longer median survival (63.59 vs. 32.04 months, p = 0.0459) and better overall survival. Conclusions NFE2L2 mutations display notable heterogeneity in lung cancer. The coexistence of NFE2L2 mutations and 3q26 amplification warrants in-depth exploration of their potential clinical implications and treatment approaches for affected patients.

ABSTRACT

The widespread use of microplastics (MPs) has led to an increase in their discharge to wastewater treatment plants. However, the knowledge of impact of MPs on macro-performance and micro-ecology in simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) systems is limited, hampering the understanding of potential risks posed by MPs. This study firstly comprehensively investigated the performance, species interactions, and community assembly under polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) exposure in SNDPR systems. The results showed under PS (1, 10 mg/L) and PVC (1, 10 mg/L) exposure, total nitrogen removal was reduced by 3.38-10.15 %. PS and PVC restrained the specific rates of nitrite and nitrate reduction (SNIRR, SNRR), as well as the activities of nitrite and nitrate reductase enzymes (NIR, NR). The specific ammonia oxidation rate (SAOR) and activity of ammonia oxidase enzyme (AMO) were reduced only at 10 mg/L PVC. PS and PVC enhanced the size of co-occurrence networks, niche breadth, and number of key species while decreasing microbial cooperation by 5.85-13.48 %. Heterogeneous selection dominated microbial community assembly, and PS and PVC strengthened the contribution of stochastic processes. PICRUSt prediction further revealed some important pathways were blocked by PS and PVC. Together, the reduced TN removal under PS and PVC exposure can be attributed to the inhibition of SAOR, SNRR, and SNIRR, the restrained activities of NIR, NR, and AMO, the changes in species interactions and community assembly mechanisms, and the suppression of some essential metabolic pathways. This paper offers a new perspective on comprehending the effects of MPs on SNDPR systems.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in house dust samples from six regions across four continents. PFASs were detected in all indoor dust samples, with total median concentrations ranging from 17.3 to 197 ng/g. Among the thirty-one PFAS analytes, eight compounds, including emerging PFASs, exhibited high detection frequencies in house dust from all six locations. The levels of PFASs varied by region, with higher concentrations found in Adelaide (Australia), Tianjin (China), and Carbondale (United States, U.S.). Moreover, PFAS composition profiles also differed among regions. Dust from Australia and the U.S. contained high levels of 6:2 fluorotelomer phosphate ester (6:2 diPAP), while perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) were predominant in other regions. Furthermore, our results indicate that socioeconomic factors impact PFAS levels. The assessment of human exposure through dust ingestion and dermal contact indicates that toddlers may experience higher exposure levels than adults. However, the hazard quotients of PFASs for both toddlers and adults were below one, indicating significant health risks are unlikely. Our study highlights the widespread occurrence of PFASs in global indoor dust and the need for continued monitoring and regulation of these chemicals.

ABSTRACT

The increasing use of phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in various applications has inevitably led to their widespread presence in the aquatic environment. This presents a considerable threat to plants. However, the interactions between PAEs and plants in the aquatic environment have not yet been comprehensively reviewed. In this review, the properties, occurrence, uptake, transformation, and toxic effects of PAEs on plants in the aquatic environment are summarized. PAEs have been prevalently detected in the aquatic environment, including surface water, groundwater, seawater, and sediment, with concentrations ranging from the ng/L or ng/kg to the mg/L or mg/kg range. PAEs in the aquatic environment can be uptake, translocated, and metabolized by plants. Exposure to PAEs induces multiple adverse effects in aquatic plants, including growth perturbation, structural damage, disruption of photosynthesis, oxidative damage, and potential genotoxicity. High-throughput omics techniques further reveal the underlying toxicity molecular mechanisms of how PAEs disrupt plants on the transcription, protein, and metabolism levels. Finally, this review proposes that future studies should evaluate the interactions between plants and PAEs with a focus on long-term exposure to environmental PAE concentrations, the effects of PAE alternatives, and human health risks via the intake of plant-based foods.

ABSTRACT

Tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite (AO168), an organophosphite antioxidant, can be oxidized to tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (AO168 = O) during the production, processing, and application of plastics. AO168 = O can be further transformed to bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate and 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol. Here, we discovered the contamination of AO168 and its transformation products in dairy products for the first time. More samples contained AO168 (mean concentration: 8.78 ng/g wet weight [ww]), bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (mean:11.1 ng/g ww) and 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (mean: 46.8 ng/g ww) than AO168 = O (mean: 40.2 ng/g ww). The concentrations of AO168 and its transformation products were significantly correlated, and differed with the packaging material and storage conditions of the product. Estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of AO168 and its transformation products were calculated. Although the overall dietary risks were below one, transformation products accounted for 96.7% of the total hazard quotients. The high-exposure EDIs of total AO168 were above the threshold of toxicological concern (300 ng/kg bw/day), and deserve continual monitoring.

ABSTRACT

The community structure and co-occurrence pattern of eukaryotic algae in Yuncheng Salt Lake were analyzed based on marker gene analysis of the 18S rRNA V4 region to understand the species composition and their synergistic adaptations to the environmental factors in different salinity waters. The results showed indicated that the overall algal composition of Yuncheng Salt Lake showed a Chlorophyta-Pyrrophyta-Bacillariophyta type structure. Chlorophyta showed an absolute advantage in all salinity waters. In addition, Cryptophyta dominated in the least saline waters; Pyrrophyta and Bacillariophyta were the dominant phyla in the waters with salinity ranging from 13.2 to 18%. Picochlorum, Nannochloris, Ulva, and Tetraselmis of Chlorophyta, Biecheleria and Oxyrrhis of Pyrrophyta, Halamphora, Psammothidium, and Navicula of Bacillariophyta, Guillardia and Rhodomonas of Cryptophyta were not observed in previous surveys of the Yuncheng Salt Lake, suggesting that the algae are undergoing a constant turnover as the water environment of the Salt Lake continues to change. The network diagram demonstrated that the algae were strongly influenced by salinity, NO3-, and pH, changes in these environmental factors would lead to changes in the algal community structure, thus affecting the stability of the network structure.
